Before you start

  • Windows 11 or Windows 10
  • Up-to-date graphics drivers

Method 1 Change the resolution

  1. Step 1: Open Display settings

Right-click the desktop and choose Display settings, or go to Settings > System > Display.

  2. Step 2: Pick your monitor

If you have several screens, click the one you want to change at the top.

  3. Step 3: Choose a resolution

Under Display resolution, pick the one marked (Recommended), your screen’s native resolution. Click Keep changes.

  4. Step 4: Adjust scaling

If text and icons look too small, change Scale (e.g. 125% or 150%) instead of lowering the resolution.

Method 2 Change the refresh rate

On Windows 10: Settings > System > Display > Advanced display settings.

  1. Step 1: Open Advanced display

In Settings > System > Display, click Advanced display.

  2. Step 2: Choose a refresh rate

Under Choose a refresh rate, pick the highest value your monitor supports (e.g. 144 Hz).

  3. Step 3: Dynamic refresh rate

On supported laptops, choose Dynamic to save battery: Windows switches between 60 Hz and the higher rate automatically.

Troubleshooting

The higher refresh rate isn’t listed

Update graphics drivers, use DisplayPort or a high-speed HDMI cable, and check the monitor’s on-screen menu for settings that limit refresh rate (like “overclock” or input version).

The screen goes black after changing settings

Wait 15 seconds without clicking: Windows reverts automatically. If not, restart in Safe Mode and change it back.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between resolution and scaling?

Resolution is the number of pixels; scaling makes everything bigger while keeping text sharp. Keep the native resolution and adjust scaling.

Does a higher refresh rate use more battery?

Yes, on laptops. Dynamic refresh rate helps balance smoothness and battery life.

Summary

Use the Recommended resolution in Settings > System > Display, adjust Scale for readability, and pick the highest rate in Advanced display > Choose a refresh rate, with a DisplayPort or modern HDMI cable.
