Before you start

  • A backup of important files
  • Your laptop plugged into power
  • Your Microsoft account password

What “Keep my files” keeps and removes

Kept: files in your user folders (Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Downloads, Music, Videos) for each account.

Removed: installed apps and drivers that didn’t come with the PC, and your settings. Windows saves a list of removed apps on your desktop afterwards.

Files stored elsewhere (for example directly on C:\ or in Program Files) may be removed, so back them up.

Method 1 Reset this PC with Keep my files

  1. Step 1: Back up

Copy important files to an external drive or OneDrive/Google Drive. Note license keys for paid software.

  2. Step 2: Open Recovery

Go to Settings > System > Recovery (Windows 10: Update & Security > Recovery).

  3. Step 3: Start the reset

Next to Reset this PC, click Reset PC and choose Keep my files.

  4. Step 4: Pick a source

Cloud download gets a fresh copy of Windows (about 4 GB, needs internet) and is the more reliable choice. Local reinstall uses files on the PC.

Check the summary and the list of apps to be removed, then click Reset. The PC restarts several times; keep it plugged in.

Method 2 If Windows won’t start

  1. Step 1: Open recovery

Force the PC off during startup 2–3 times to open Automatic Repair, then Advanced options.

  2. Step 2: Reset

Choose Troubleshoot > Reset this PC > Keep my files and follow the steps.

Troubleshooting

“There was a problem resetting your PC”

Use Cloud download, or reset from a Windows installation USB.

Some files are missing after the reset

Check C:\Windows.old (if present) for leftover files, and restore from your backup.
