Before you start
- Your router’s admin password
- A computer connected by Ethernet (recommended for manual updates)
Method 1 TP-Link routers
-
Step 1: Online update in the app
Open TP-Link Tether (or Deco for mesh), select your router, then Tools > Firmware Update (Deco: More > Update Deco). Tap Update if available.
-
Step 2: Online update on the web
Go to tplinkwifi.net (or 192.168.0.1), log in, open Advanced > System > Firmware Update (older: System Tools > Firmware Upgrade) and click Check for upgrade.
-
Step 3: Manual update

Step 2: Online update on the web
Go to 192.168.3.1 (Wi-Fi routers) or 192.168.8.1 (4G/5G CPE), log in, then More functions > System settings > Update (names vary) and check for updates.
-
Step 3: Provider-branded Huawei routers
Routers from your internet provider are often updated by the provider automatically and may hide the update option.
Troubleshooting
“Firmware file is invalid”
The file is for a different model, region or hardware version. Match the label exactly.
Router won’t start after the update
Wait 10 minutes. Then try a factory reset. TP-Link routers often have a recovery (TFTP) procedure documented on their support site.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I update router firmware?
Check every few months, or enable auto-update. Install security updates as soon as they appear.
Does updating erase my settings?
Usually not, but some major updates reset settings. Note your Wi-Fi name and password first.
Summary
Use the router’s app or web interface to check for updates online; for manual updates, download the firmware for your exact hardware version. Stay wired and don’t interrupt the router while it updates.
