Before you start

  • VPN server details from your provider or IT department

Method 1 Add the VPN connection

  1. Step 1: Open VPN settings

Go to Settings > Network & internet > VPN and click Add VPN.

  2. Step 2: Fill in the details

VPN provider: Windows (built-in). Connection name: anything. Server name or address: from your provider.

  3. Step 3: Choose the VPN type

Pick the type your provider uses: IKEv2 (modern and stable), L2TP/IPsec with pre-shared key (enter the key), or SSTP. Avoid PPTP, which is insecure.

  4. Step 4: Sign-in info

Choose User name and password (or certificate) and enter them. Click Save.

Method 2 Connect

  1. Step 1: From Settings

In Settings > Network & internet > VPN, click Connect next to your VPN.

  2. Step 2: From Quick Settings

Press Win + A, click VPN and choose your connection.

Troubleshooting

Error 809 with L2TP

The connection is blocked by NAT. Your IT team may need to allow L2TP over NAT, or use IKEv2/SSTP instead.

Connected but no internet

The VPN may not allow internet access (only internal company resources). Check with your provider about split tunnelling.

Authentication failed

Recheck username, password, pre-shared key and VPN type. Certificates must be installed if required.

Frequently asked questions

Is the built-in VPN client secure?

Yes with IKEv2, SSTP or L2TP/IPsec. Avoid PPTP.

Can I use a free VPN this way?

Only if it provides manual configuration details. Be careful with free VPNs’ privacy policies.

Summary

Go to Settings > Network & internet > VPN > Add VPN, choose Windows (built-in), and enter the server, type and credentials from your provider. Use the provider’s app for WireGuard or OpenVPN.
