Before you start

  • Your Snapchat username and password
  • Access to the email or phone number on the account

Method 1 Download your Snapchat data first

Memories saved only to Snapchat are lost when the account is deleted, so export them or save them to your camera roll first.

  1. Step 1: Open My Data

In Snapchat, tap your profile icon, then the Settings gear. Scroll to Privacy Controls and tap My Data.

  2. Step 2: Choose what to export

Select Export your Memories and any other data you want, such as chat history and friends, then choose the date range.

  3. Step 3: Submit and download

Tap Submit. Snapchat emails you a download link when your file is ready, which can take a few hours to a few days. Save the file before you delete the account.

Method 2 Delete the account

  1. Step 1: Open the accounts portal

In a web browser, go to accounts.snapchat.com and sign in. In the app, you can also go to Settings, scroll to Account Actions and tap Delete Account, which opens the same page.

  2. Step 2: Choose Delete my account

    Select Delete my account.

  3. Step 3: Confirm

Enter your username and password and tap Continue. Your account is now deactivated: friends can’t contact you or see your profile.

  4. Step 4: Stay logged out

Remove the app or sign out. After 30 days, Snapchat permanently deletes your account, friends, Snaps, chats and Memories.

How to reactivate within 30 days

Open Snapchat and log in with your username (not your email) and password. Reactivation can take up to 24 hours. After 30 days, the account can’t be restored.

Troubleshooting

I forgot my password

On the login screen tap Forgot your password? and reset it by email or SMS, then delete the account.

My account was reactivated by accident

Logging in on any device, even by a saved login, reactivates the account. Sign out everywhere and start the deletion again.

Frequently asked questions

Can people still see my messages after I delete my account?

Messages already saved in a chat by a friend can stay visible to them. Everything else is removed.

Can I reuse my username later?

No. Usernames of deleted accounts can’t be used again.

Summary

Export your Memories and data from Settings > Privacy Controls > My Data, then delete the account at accounts.snapchat.com. Stay logged out for 30 days and it’s gone for good, or log back in before then to keep it.
