Before you start

  • Zoom desktop app or Microsoft Teams
  • Recording permission from the host or your organisation

Method 1 Record a Zoom meeting

If you’re not the host, the host must allow you to record (Participants > your name > Allow record).

  1. Step 1: Start recording

In the meeting, click Record in the toolbar (or More > Record).

  2. Step 2: Choose where

Pick Record on this computer (free plans, desktop app) or Record to the cloud (paid plans).

  3. Step 3: Pause or stop

Use Pause or Stop in the toolbar.

  4. Step 4: Find it

Local recordings convert to MP4 when the meeting ends and save to Documents/Zoom. Cloud recordings appear in the Zoom web portal under Recordings.

Method 2 Record a Microsoft Teams meeting

Recording depends on your organisation’s Teams policy and licence. If the option is missing, ask your IT admin.

  1. Step 1: Open more actions

In the meeting, click More actions (⋯).

  2. Step 2: Start recording

Choose Record and transcribe > Start recording. Everyone sees a notification.

  3. Step 3: Stop

Click More actions > Record and transcribe > Stop recording.

  4. Step 4: Find it

The recording appears in the meeting chat. It’s stored in the organiser’s OneDrive (or SharePoint for channel meetings).

Troubleshooting

Zoom recording didn’t convert

Open the Zoom app > Meetings > Recorded and click Convert, or look for a .zoom file in the recording folder and open it with Zoom.

Teams says recording is disabled

Your organisation’s policy blocks it, or you’re a guest. Ask the organiser or IT.

Frequently asked questions

Can I record on my phone?

Zoom mobile supports cloud recording on paid plans; Teams mobile can record if allowed by policy.

Does the host know if I record?

Yes. Zoom and Teams show a recording indicator to everyone.

Summary

In Zoom, click Record and choose local or cloud; in Teams, use More actions > Record and transcribe. Get permission first, and find recordings in Documents/Zoom, the Zoom portal, or the Teams meeting chat.
