Before you start
- Your own document
- The original source file, or Adobe Acrobat Pro
Method 1 Fix it in the original file (best quality)
-
Step 1: Open the source
Open the Word document the PDF was made from.
-
Step 2: Remove the watermark
Go to Design > Watermark > Remove Watermark. If it was added as a header image, double-click the header area and delete it.
-
Step 3: Export again
File > Save As > PDF (or Export).
Method 2 Adobe Acrobat Pro
If the watermark is part of a scanned image or flattened into the page, Acrobat can’t remove it cleanly; recreate the document instead.
-
Step 1: Open Edit PDF
Open the PDF in Acrobat Pro and choose Edit a PDF.
-
Step 2: Remove watermark
Choose Watermark > Remove and confirm. This works for watermarks added with Acrobat’s watermark tool.
Method 3 Watermark added by a free tool
-
Step 1: Re-create the PDF
Some free converters add their logo. Convert the original again with a tool that doesn’t watermark, such as Word’s built-in PDF export, Microsoft Print to PDF, or PDF24.
Troubleshooting
Remove does nothing
The watermark isn’t a real watermark object (it may be an image or text on each page). Edit with Acrobat’s Edit tools, or recreate from the source.
Frequently asked questions
Can I remove a watermark for free?
Yes, if you have the original file: remove it there and re-export. Removing watermarks inside existing PDFs usually needs Acrobat Pro or a PDF editor.
Summary
Remove the watermark in the original file and export to PDF again, or use Acrobat Pro > Edit a PDF > Watermark > Remove. Leave watermarks on documents you don’t own.
