How to Fix an External Hard Drive Not Showing Up

If your external drive doesn’t appear in File Explorer, first try another cable and USB port. Then open Disk Management: often the drive is there but has no drive letter, which takes seconds to fix. Don’t format or initialise a drive that holds data until you’ve tried recovery.

Quick answer

  1. 1 Try a different USB cable and port (directly on the PC, not a hub).
  2. 2 Right-click Start > Disk Management and look for the drive.
  3. 3 If it has no letter: right-click the partition > Change Drive Letter and Paths > Add.
  4. 4 If it shows as RAW or Not Initialized, recover your files before formatting.

Before you start

  • Administrator access
  • Another cable or PC for testing

Method 1 Check the hardware

  1. Step 1: Listen and look

Is the drive’s light on? Can you feel or hear it spin? If not, it may lack power. Drives with a separate power adapter must be plugged into the wall.

  2. Step 2: Try another cable and port

USB cables fail often. Use a different cable and a port directly on the PC (back ports on desktops), not a hub or front panel.

  3. Step 3: Try another computer

If the drive appears elsewhere, the problem is your PC’s settings or drivers.

Method 2 Fix it in Disk Management

  1. Step 1: Open Disk Management

    Right-click Start > Disk Management.

  2. Step 2: Find the drive

Look for a disk matching your drive’s size (e.g. Disk 2, 931 GB for a 1 TB drive).

  3. Step 3: No drive letter?

If the partition shows as Healthy but has no letter, right-click it > Change Drive Letter and Paths > Add and pick a letter. It appears in File Explorer.

  4. Step 4: Offline?

If the disk says Offline, right-click the disk label on the left and choose Online.

Method 3 Update or reinstall the driver

  1. Step 1: Open Device Manager

Right-click Start > Device Manager and expand Disk drives and Universal Serial Bus controllers.

  2. Step 2: Reinstall

Right-click the drive (or any device with a yellow warning) > Uninstall device, unplug the drive, restart and plug it back in.

  3. Step 3: Stop USB power saving

In Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings, set USB selective suspend to Disabled.

Drive shows as RAW or asks to be formatted

The file system is damaged. First try chkdsk X: /f in an admin Terminal (replace X with the drive letter). If that fails, use recovery software such as TestDisk/PhotoRec (free) or a reputable commercial tool to copy files to another drive. Only then format it.

If the drive clicks, beeps or isn’t detected anywhere, stop using it. A professional data recovery service is the safest option for important data.

Troubleshooting

The drive appears then disappears

Usually not enough power or a bad cable. Use a powered USB hub, a short quality cable, or the drive’s power adapter.

Disk Management freezes

A failing drive can hang Disk Management. Unplug it, open Disk Management, then plug it in again. Persistent hanging suggests hardware failure.

Frequently asked questions

Will assigning a drive letter delete data?

No. It only lets Windows show the drive in File Explorer.

Why does my drive show the wrong size?

Manufacturers use decimal GB; Windows uses binary. A 1 TB drive shows as about 931 GB, which is normal.

Summary

Try a different cable and port, then check Disk Management: add a drive letter or bring the disk Online. Never format a drive with data on it until you’ve tried to recover your files.
