Before you start

  • A photo with a clear subject

Method 1 Windows 11: Paint or Photos

Update Paint and Photos from the Microsoft Store if you don’t see the options.

  1. Step 1: Paint

Open the image in Paint and click Remove background in the toolbar. Then File > Save as > PNG to keep transparency.

  2. Step 2: Photos

Open in Photos, click Edit, choose Background, then Remove (or blur/replace it). Save a copy.

Method 2 iPhone and iPad

  1. Step 1: Lift the subject

Open the photo in Photos, then press and hold on the person, pet or object until it glows.

  2. Step 2: Copy or share

Tap Copy to paste it elsewhere, Share to save it, or Add Sticker to use it in Messages.

Method 3 Mac: Preview

  1. Step 1: Open the image

    Open it in Preview.

  2. Step 2: Remove Background

Choose Tools > Remove Background. Save as PNG if asked to keep transparency.

Method 4 Online: Adobe Express

Avoid uploading private or sensitive photos to online services.

  1. Step 1: Upload

Go to Adobe Express’s free Remove background tool and upload your image.

  2. Step 2: Download

Download the result as PNG. A free Adobe account may be required.

Troubleshooting

The background turns white instead of transparent

Save as PNG, not JPG. JPG doesn’t support transparency.

Parts of the subject were removed

Try a photo with stronger contrast, or touch up with an eraser/restore brush in a tool like Photopea or GIMP.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free tool on Android?

Google Photos on supported phones offers editing tools, and apps like Adobe Express or Canva (some features paid) work on Android.

Can I add a new background?

Yes: Windows Photos can replace backgrounds; otherwise place the PNG on a new background in any editor.

Summary

Use Paint’s Remove background on Windows 11, lift the subject on iPhone, or Preview > Tools > Remove Background on Mac. Save as PNG to keep transparency.
