How to Configure Quality of Service (QoS) on Router

QoS settings differ by brand but follow the same idea: tell the router your real internet speed, then choose which devices or types of traffic get priority. Set bandwidth to about 90% of your measured speed and test with a loaded latency test.

Quick answer

  1. 1 Run a wired speed test and note download and upload speeds.
  2. 2 Open your router’s QoS page and enter about 90% of those values.
  3. 3 Choose priority by device (e.g. console = High) or by application (gaming, video calls).
  4. 4 Save and test with a bufferbloat test while downloading.

Before you start

  • A router with QoS
  • Your measured internet speed

Method 1 General steps (any router)

  1. Step 1: Measure speed

Use a cable and speedtest.net. Note download and upload in Mbps.

  2. Step 2: Enter bandwidth

In QoS, enter about 90% of each speed. Too high and QoS can’t control the queue; too low wastes speed.

  3. Step 3: Set priority

Choose device priority (pick your console or work PC) or application priority (Gaming, Video conferencing, Streaming).

  4. Step 4: Test

Run a bufferbloat test while someone downloads. Latency should stay low.

Method 2 Brand examples

Menu names change with firmware versions. Search your model plus “QoS” if you can’t find them.

  1. Step 1: TP-Link (web)

Advanced > QoS: tick Enable QoS, set upload/download bandwidth, then add High priority devices and a time period. Deco app: More > QoS.

  2. Step 2: ASUS

Adaptive QoS > QoS: enable, choose Adaptive QoS (drag categories into order) or Traditional/Cake (where available) and set bandwidth.

  3. Step 3: Netgear Nighthawk

Advanced > Setup > QoS Setup: enable Dynamic QoS and run its speed test; newer models handle it in the Nighthawk app.

Troubleshooting

Speeds dropped a lot after enabling QoS

The bandwidth values are too low, or the router CPU can’t keep up with QoS at high speeds. Raise the values or disable QoS on very fast plans.

Priority doesn’t seem to work

Make sure the device has a reserved IP and the rule points to it.

Frequently asked questions

Should I prioritise my console or my laptop?

Prioritise whatever needs low latency: games and video calls. Downloads can be lower priority.

Do I need QoS on fibre?

Often not, but it still helps if several people use the connection heavily at once.

Summary

Enter about 90% of your measured speed in the QoS page, set device or application priorities, and verify with a bufferbloat test. The menu name varies by brand, but the steps are the same.
