How to Block Someone from Using My Wi-Fi Network

The surest way to remove someone from your Wi-Fi is to change the password. For a single device, most router apps have a Block button in the device list. MAC filtering and a guest network for visitors help keep things under control.

Quick answer

  1. 1 Open your router’s app or admin page and view connected devices.
  2. 2 Select the unknown device and tap Block (or add it to a block list).
  3. 3 Change your Wi-Fi password so anyone who knows it is kicked off.
  4. 4 Give visitors a separate guest network in future.

Before you start

  • Access to your router’s app or admin page

Method 1 Block a specific device

  1. Step 1: Open connected devices

In your router app (TP-Link Tether/Deco, Google Home, eero, Netgear, ASUS, Huawei AI Life) open Clients/Devices. In a browser admin page, look for Attached Devices, DHCP Clients or Device List.

  2. Step 2: Identify the device

Names like “Galaxy-A54” or “iPhone” help. Compare MAC addresses with your own devices (shown in each device’s Wi-Fi settings).

  3. Step 3: Block it

Tap the device and choose Block, Pause or Add to blacklist. It’s disconnected and can’t rejoin.

Method 2 Change your Wi-Fi password (most effective)

Blocking by device can be dodged with a different device or a randomised MAC address. A new password can’t.

  1. Step 1: Open wireless settings

In the router app or admin page, open Wireless/Wi-Fi settings.

  2. Step 2: Set a new password

Choose a new strong password and WPA2/WPA3 security, then save.

  3. Step 3: Reconnect your devices

Everyone is disconnected; only people you give the new password to can rejoin.

Method 3 Allow only your devices (MAC filtering)

This takes upkeep (every new device must be added), and phones use private MAC addresses per network. It’s a useful extra layer, not a replacement for a strong password.

  1. Step 1: Find MAC filtering

Look for MAC Filtering, Access Control or Wireless MAC Filter.

  2. Step 2: Choose allow list

Switch to Allow/Whitelist mode and add your own devices. Everything else is blocked.

Troubleshooting

I blocked my own device by mistake

Connect with a cable or another device, open the block list and remove it.

The unknown device keeps coming back

Change the Wi-Fi password and turn off WPS. Check your router admin password hasn’t been changed by someone else.

Frequently asked questions

Will the person know they were blocked?

They’ll just see they can’t connect or have no internet. Routers don’t send notifications.

Is it illegal for someone to use my Wi-Fi without permission?

In many countries, using a network without permission is an offence. Securing your network is the practical solution.

Summary

Block the device in your router’s device list, then change your Wi-Fi password to keep everyone you don’t trust off for good. Use a guest network for visitors and turn off WPS.
