How to Fix a Public Wi-Fi Login Page That Won’t Appear

Public networks in hotels, airports and cafés use a sign-in page called a captive portal. If it doesn’t pop up, open a plain HTTP site such as neverssl.com, turn off your VPN and custom DNS, and use your browser to trigger the login page.

Before you start

  • Access details for the network, if it needs a code or room number

How captive portals work

The network blocks internet access until you accept terms or enter a code. Your device detects this and shows a “Sign in to network” pop-up. If the detection fails, you’re connected but nothing loads. This guide helps you reach the page legitimately; it’s not a way around paid access.

Method 1 Open the login page manually

  1. Step 1: Visit a plain HTTP site

Open a browser and type http://neverssl.com. Because it doesn’t use HTTPS, the network can redirect you to its login page.

  2. Step 2: Try the gateway address

If that doesn’t work, try the router address, often 192.168.1.1, 192.168.0.1 or 1.1.1.1 (some portals), or check signs for a login URL.

  3. Step 3: Use a private window

A private/incognito window avoids cached pages that hide the redirect.

Method 2 Remove what blocks the redirect

  1. Step 1: Turn off VPN

Disconnect your VPN until you’ve signed in.

  2. Step 2: Disable custom DNS

Android: Settings > Network & internet > Private DNS > Off/Automatic. Windows/Mac: set DNS back to automatic. Browsers: turn off “secure DNS” temporarily.

  3. Step 3: Forget and reconnect

Forget the network, reconnect, and wait a few seconds for the pop-up. On iPhone, make sure Auto-Login is on for that network.

Troubleshooting

The page opens but won’t accept my details

Check the room number/surname format or code with staff. Some portals limit the number of devices per guest.

It worked yesterday but not today

Access may expire after 24 hours. Visit neverssl.com again to sign in.

Frequently asked questions

Why does HTTPS stop the login page?

Secure sites can’t be redirected without warnings, so portals rely on plain HTTP requests to show their page.

Can I connect a laptop and TV with one login?

Some hotels allow several devices; others limit it. Ask the venue.

Summary

Open http://neverssl.com to trigger the sign-in page, and turn off VPN and custom DNS until you’re logged in. Then protect yourself with HTTPS and, ideally, a VPN.
