Before you start

  • Administrator access
  • An internet connection

Method 1 Find out which graphics card you have

You can also open Task Manager > Performance > GPU to see the model.

  1. Step 1: Open Device Manager

Right-click Start and choose Device Manager.

  2. Step 2: Expand Display adapters

The graphics card name appears, for example NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060, AMD Radeon RX 7600 or Intel UHD Graphics. Laptops often show two: integrated (Intel/AMD) and dedicated (NVIDIA/AMD).

Method 2 Install the latest driver

On laptops, especially older ones, the laptop maker’s driver (Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS) may include custom tweaks. If the generic driver causes problems, use the one from the laptop support page.

  1. Step 1: NVIDIA

Download the NVIDIA App from nvidia.com. Open Drivers and install the latest Game Ready (for gaming) or Studio (for creative apps) driver. Or use the manual driver search on nvidia.com.

  2. Step 2: AMD

Download AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition from amd.com/support, or use the auto-detect tool. It installs the right driver and checks for updates.

  3. Step 3: Intel

Run Intel Driver & Support Assistant from intel.com to detect and install graphics drivers.

  4. Step 4: Restart

Restart the PC after installing, even if not asked.

Method 3 Update from Device Manager

Device Manager often says you already have the best driver even when a newer one exists on the manufacturer’s site.

  1. Step 1: Open the device

In Device Manager > Display adapters, right-click the card and choose Update driver.

  2. Step 2: Choose a source

Pick Search automatically for drivers, or Browse my computer if you downloaded a driver package and extracted it.

Troubleshooting

The installer says no compatible hardware found

You downloaded the driver for a different card or Windows version. Double-check the model in Device Manager; laptops may need the manufacturer’s driver.

Black screen or crashes after updating

Roll back: Device Manager > Display adapters > Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver, or reinstall an older version from the manufacturer’s archive.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I update graphics drivers?

For gaming, when a new driver supports a game you play or fixes a bug. Otherwise every few months is fine.

Does Windows Update install graphics drivers?

Yes, basic ones, but they’re often older than the manufacturer’s versions.

Will updating drivers improve FPS?

Sometimes, especially for new games. It’s rarely a big jump for older games.

Summary

Check your card in Device Manager > Display adapters, then use the NVIDIA App, AMD Adrenalin or Intel Driver & Support Assistant to install the latest driver. Restart, and use a clean install if anything misbehaves.
