Before you start
- A Windows PC or Mac
Method 1 Clear the desktop
-
Step 1: Make a holding folder
Create a folder on the desktop called “To sort” and drag everything into it. You instantly have a clean screen.
-
Step 2: Delete obvious junk
Old installers, duplicate downloads and screenshots you no longer need can go to the Recycle Bin/Trash.
Method 2 Create a simple folder system
-
Step 1: Use Documents
In Documents, create a few top-level folders: Work, Personal, Finance, Projects, Archive.
-
Step 2: Name files clearly
Use names like 2026-10 Electricity bill.pdf. Starting with the date sorts files in order.
-
Step 3: Sort the holding folder
Move each file into its place. Anything you haven’t touched in a year can go to Archive.
Method 3 Tidy icons
-
Step 1: Windows
Right-click the desktop > View > tick Auto arrange icons and Align icons to grid; choose an icon size. Use Sort by for name or date.
-
Step 2: Mac
Right-click the desktop > Use Stacks to group files by kind automatically, or Sort By for neat rows.
-
Step 3: Pin, don’t clutter
Pin favourite apps to the taskbar/Dock and favourite folders to Quick access (Windows) or the Finder sidebar.
Method 4 Keep it clean automatically
-
Step 1: Storage Sense (Windows)
Settings > System > Storage > Storage Sense: auto-delete Downloads files older than a set number of days, if you like.
-
Step 2: Change where screenshots go
Mac: Shift + Command + 5 > Options > Save to a Screenshots folder. Windows saves to Pictures > Screenshots.
-
Step 3: Weekly 5-minute tidy
Once a week, empty the “To sort” folder.
Troubleshooting
Icons jump around after restarting
Turn off Auto arrange if you want a custom layout, or keep it on for a consistent order. Display scaling changes can also move icons.
Frequently asked questions
Does a cluttered desktop slow the computer?
Slightly, especially with many large files and previews. The bigger cost is your time finding things.
Should I use the desktop for anything?
Use it for a few current projects or shortcuts, not as permanent storage.
Summary
Move everything into a holding folder, sort it into a few clear Documents folders, keep only daily shortcuts on the desktop, and use Auto arrange or Stacks plus a weekly tidy to keep it clean.
