Before you start
- A computer or phone
- An Ethernet cable for the most accurate result
Method 1 Set up a fair test
-
Step 1: Use a cable
Plug a laptop or PC into the router with Ethernet. Wi-Fi results reflect your Wi-Fi, not your internet line.
-
Step 2: Stop other traffic
Pause downloads, cloud backups, game updates and streaming on every device in the house.
-
Step 3: Close VPNs
Turn off any VPN, which slows and reroutes traffic.
Method 2 Run the test
-
Step 1: Pick a test
Speedtest.net (Ookla): detailed, lets you pick servers. Fast.com (Netflix): simple, tests real streaming servers. speed.cloudflare.com: shows latency under load.
-
Step 2: Repeat
Run 3 tests and at different times (morning and evening). Evening slowdowns point to congestion at your provider.
-
Step 3: Test on Wi-Fi too
Then test on Wi-Fi in the rooms you use most to see how much speed you lose.
| Measurement | What it means | Good for most homes |
|---|---|---|
| Download | Speed of receiving data (streaming, browsing) | Close to your plan’s speed on a cable |
| Upload | Speed of sending (video calls, backups) | 10+ Mbps for calls; more for creators |
| Ping / latency | Delay for a round trip, in ms | Under 30 ms (gaming), under 100 ms (general) |
| Jitter | How much ping varies | Under 10–20 ms |
| Loaded latency / bufferbloat | Ping while the line is busy | Small increase only |
Troubleshooting
Results vary wildly
Wi-Fi interference, other users and distant test servers all cause variation. Use a cable and the same nearby server each time.
Speed tests are fast but websites feel slow
The problem may be DNS or high latency. Try a different DNS server and check loaded latency.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my speed lower than advertised?
Plans are often “up to” speeds. Wi-Fi, old routers, busy times and device limits all reduce real-world speed.
Can my phone test my speed accurately?
It tests your phone’s Wi-Fi or mobile connection. Phones near the router on 5 GHz give a reasonable idea, but a cable is more accurate.
Summary
Test with a cable, everything else paused, on Speedtest, Fast.com or Cloudflare, three times at different hours. Compare download and upload with your plan, and keep an eye on ping and jitter for gaming and calls.
