Before you start
- A bank account with your phone number registered on it
- Your account number or debit card
- A smartphone with a screen lock
Method 1 Register for mobile or online banking
Some banks require you to visit a branch or ATM to activate online banking the first time.
-
Step 1: Get the genuine app
Open your bank’s official website (type the address yourself) and use its links to Google Play or the App Store. In the store, check the developer name matches your bank exactly and look at the download count.
-
Step 2: Start registration
Open the app and tap Register, Sign up or New user. You’ll usually need your account number, debit card number and PIN, or your customer ID.
-
Step 3: Verify your phone
Enter the one-time code sent by SMS to the phone number registered with the bank. If your number has changed, update it at a branch first.
-
Step 4: Create your login
Set a password or app PIN that you don’t use anywhere else, then turn on fingerprint or face login.
Method 2 Turn on the security features
-
Step 1: Transaction alerts
In the app’s settings or notifications, turn on alerts for every payment, withdrawal and login so you spot fraud immediately.
-
Step 2: Two-step verification
Turn on any extra verification your bank offers, such as an authenticator in the app, for new payees and large transfers.
-
Step 3: Card controls
Many apps let you freeze your card, block online or international payments and set daily limits. Use them.
-
Step 4: Lock your phone
Use a PIN, fingerprint or face lock on the phone itself, and keep the phone’s software updated.
Signs of a banking scam
- A message saying your account is blocked, with a link to “verify” it.
- A caller who already knows some of your details and creates urgency.
- A request to install a screen-sharing or “support” app.
- An app or website with spelling mistakes or a slightly different address.
If you think you’ve been scammed, call your bank immediately using the official number to freeze your account and card.
Troubleshooting
I didn’t receive the verification code
Check the phone number registered with the bank, that your SIM has signal, and that you haven’t blocked SMS from the bank. Wait a few minutes before requesting another code.
The app says my device isn’t supported
Banking apps often block rooted or jailbroken phones and very old software versions. Update the phone or use online banking in a browser.
Frequently asked questions
Is mobile banking safe?
Yes, when you use the official app, keep your phone locked and updated, and never share codes. Most fraud happens through tricks that get people to share details.
Can I use banking apps on public Wi-Fi?
Banking apps encrypt your connection, but it’s safer to use mobile data for banking when you’re out.
Summary
Install the official app from your bank’s website, register with your account or card details and the SMS code, then turn on biometric login, transaction alerts and card controls. Never share PINs, passwords or one-time codes with anyone.
