Before you start

  • Your provider account login

Method 1 Home internet: provider and router

  1. Step 1: Provider app or account

Most providers with data caps show usage in their app or website (often under Usage or My plan). This is the official number.

  2. Step 2: Router statistics

Many routers show traffic per device or per month (Traffic Statistics, Data usage, Traffic Meter on Netgear). Some can alert you near a limit.

Method 2 Windows

  1. Step 1: Open Data usage

Go to Settings > Network & internet > Data usage (Windows 11; or Advanced network settings > Data usage).

  2. Step 2: Set a limit

Click Enter limit to set a monthly cap and get a warning near it.

  3. Step 3: Metered connection

Mark limited connections as metered to reduce background updates.

Method 3 Phones

  1. Step 1: Android

Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > App data usage and Data warning & limit. Set the billing cycle start date to match your plan.

  2. Step 2: iPhone

Settings > Cellular shows usage since the last reset. Reset statistics at the start of each billing period (bottom of the page). Your carrier’s app is more accurate.

Troubleshooting

Numbers don’t match my provider

Devices only count their own usage and may reset at different dates. Your provider’s figure is what you’re billed on.

Frequently asked questions

Do all home internet plans have caps?

Many don’t. Check your contract or provider’s website.

What happens if I go over?

Depending on the plan: extra charges, slower speeds, or nothing.

Summary

Check your provider’s app for official usage, use your router and device data usage settings to see what uses the most, and set warnings so you never hit your cap by surprise.
