Before you start

  • A Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet (One UI)

Method 1 Use the button shortcut

This works on every Galaxy phone without a Home button, including the S, A, M, Z Flip and Z Fold series.

  1. Step 1: Open the screen

Go to the screen, chat or page you want to capture.

  2. Step 2: Press two buttons together

Press the Side key (power button) and the Volume down key at the same time, then release them quickly. Holding them too long opens the power menu instead.

  3. Step 3: Use the toolbar

The screen flashes and a small toolbar appears at the bottom. From here you can edit, tag, share or capture more (see scrolling screenshots below). If you ignore it, the screenshot is saved automatically.

Method 2 Swipe your palm across the screen

Handy when you can’t press two buttons at once, for example while holding the phone in one hand.

  1. Step 1: Turn on Palm swipe

Open Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures and turn on Palm swipe to capture.

  2. Step 2: Swipe

Place the side of your hand on the right or left edge of the screen, upright like a karate chop, and swipe it across to the other side while touching the glass.

Method 3 Capture a whole scrolling page

  1. Step 1: Take a normal screenshot

Use the buttons or palm swipe on a long web page, chat or document.

  2. Step 2: Tap the scroll capture icon

In the toolbar, tap the icon with a downward arrow (Scroll capture). The page scrolls and adds more to your image.

  3. Step 3: Keep tapping or stop

Keep tapping it to capture further down, or tap anywhere else to stop. The result is saved as one tall image.

Method 4 Other ways: voice, S Pen and Assistant menu

  1. Step 1: Ask Bixby or Google

Say “Hey Bixby, take a screenshot” or ask Google Assistant / Gemini to “take a screenshot”. Useful when your hands are busy.

  2. Step 2: Use the S Pen

On Galaxy S Ultra, Note and Fold models with an S Pen, open Air command and choose Screen write to capture and draw on the screen, or Smart select to capture just part of it.

  3. Step 3: Use the Assistant menu

Turn on Settings > Accessibility > Interaction and dexterity > Assistant menu. A floating button appears; tap it and choose Screenshot. Good for people who find the buttons hard to press.

Where Samsung saves screenshots

Open the Gallery app, tap Albums and open Screenshots. In the My Files app they’re in Internal storage > DCIM > Screenshots. Screen recordings are saved in a separate Screen recordings folder.

To change the format (JPG or PNG) or hide the toolbar, go to Settings > Advanced features > Screenshots and screen recordings.

Troubleshooting

The power menu opens instead of taking a screenshot

You’re holding the buttons too long. Press both at exactly the same moment and let go straight away, like a quick click.

“Can’t take screenshot due to security policy”

Some apps, such as banking apps, Netflix or incognito tabs, block screenshots to protect your privacy or copyright. That’s intentional and can’t be changed. Work phones managed by an employer may block screenshots too.

Palm swipe does nothing

Check that Palm swipe to capture is on, and use the edge of your hand, not your palm flat. It doesn’t work while the on-screen keyboard is open.

Frequently asked questions

How do I screenshot on an older Samsung with a Home button?

Press and hold the Home button and the Power button together for about a second.

Can I take a screenshot of a whole web page on Samsung?

Yes. Take a normal screenshot, then keep tapping the Scroll capture (down-arrow) icon in the toolbar until you’ve captured everything you need.

How do I record my screen on Samsung?

Swipe down twice from the top to open Quick settings and tap Screen recorder. Choose whether to record sound, then tap Start recording.

Does the other person know if I screenshot a chat?

Normal messaging apps like WhatsApp and SMS don’t notify anyone. Snapchat does notify the sender, and disappearing-message features in some apps may block screenshots.

Summary

On a Samsung Galaxy, press Side key + Volume down together for an instant screenshot, use Palm swipe if you prefer a gesture, and tap the scroll capture icon for long pages. Your screenshots are in Gallery > Albums > Screenshots.
