Before you start
- A router that supports guest networks (most do)
Method 1 Turn on the guest network
-
Step 1: Open router settings
Use your router’s app (Deco, Tether, Google Home, eero, Nighthawk, ASUS, Huawei AI Life) or its admin page.
-
Step 2: Find Guest Network
It’s usually under Wireless, Guest Network or Advanced.
-
Step 3: Enable and name it
Turn it on for 2.4 GHz and/or 5 GHz, and give it a name like “Home-Guest”.
-
Step 4: Set a password
Choose WPA2/WPA3 and a password different from your main one.
-
Step 5: Keep it isolated
Leave Access local network / Allow guests to see each other off. Guests then get internet only.
Method 2 Optional limits
-
Step 1: Time limit
Some routers let the guest network turn off automatically after a few hours or days.
-
Step 2: Bandwidth limit
Set a speed cap so guests don’t slow down your calls or games.
-
Step 3: Share by QR
Many apps show a QR code for the guest network; print it for visitors.
Troubleshooting
Guests can’t cast to my TV
Isolation blocks casting. Either temporarily allow local access, or use the TV’s guest/cast mode if available.
Guest network option is missing
Update the router firmware or use the provider’s app. Very old routers may not support it.
Frequently asked questions
Is a guest network slower?
It shares the same internet connection. Without limits, speed is the same.
Can guests see my files?
Not if network isolation is on, which is the main point of a guest network.
Summary
Turn on Guest Network in your router, give it its own name and WPA2/WPA3 password, and keep local access off. Visitors get internet while your devices stay private.
