Before you start
- Access to your modem and router
Method 1 Power cycle in the right order
-
Step 1: Unplug both
Unplug the power cable from the router and the modem. If you have one box from your provider (a gateway), unplug just that. Don’t press the Reset button.
-
Step 2: Wait
Wait 30–60 seconds so the devices fully power down and clear their memory.
-
Step 3: Modem first
Plug in the modem and wait until its Online/Internet light is solid (usually 1–2 minutes).
-
Step 4: Then the router
Plug in the router and wait until its Wi-Fi light is on.
-
Step 5: Test
Reconnect a device and run a speed test.
Method 2 Restart from the app or admin page
-
Step 1: Open the router app/admin page
Most apps have a Reboot/Restart option (often under System or the device menu).
-
Step 2: Schedule restarts
Some routers can reboot automatically weekly at night (Reboot Schedule), which keeps older models stable.
Troubleshooting
The modem’s online light keeps blinking
It can’t connect to your provider. Check cables, look for outages on the provider’s website or app, and call support.
Internet works but Wi-Fi is missing
Check the router’s Wi-Fi light/button and that the Wi-Fi radio is enabled in its settings.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I restart my router?
Only when you have problems, or monthly if your router gets unstable over time.
Does restarting change my IP address?
Sometimes. Many providers keep the same public IP for days or weeks.
Summary
Unplug the modem and router, wait 30–60 seconds, plug in the modem first, wait for it to come online, then the router. Don’t press Reset unless you want to erase settings.
