Before you start
- An HDMI cable or adapter, or a Miracast/Chromecast-capable TV
Method 1 Connect with a cable
-
Step 1: Plug it in
Connect an HDMI cable from your laptop to the TV or projector. For USB-C laptops, use a USB-C to HDMI adapter (the port usually has a DisplayPort or Thunderbolt symbol).
-
Step 2: Pick the input
On the TV or projector, select the matching input (e.g. HDMI 2) with its remote.
-
Step 3: Choose a display mode
Press Win + P and choose Duplicate to show the same image, or Extend to use it as a second screen.
Method 2 Connect wirelessly (Miracast)
Wireless casting has a slight delay, fine for presentations and films, not ideal for games.
-
Step 1: Prepare the TV
Turn on Screen mirroring on your TV (many Samsung, LG, Sony, Hisense and Fire TV devices support Miracast) or use a Miracast adapter.
-
Step 2: Press Win + K
On the PC, press Win + K (or open Quick Settings > Cast) and select your TV.
-
Step 3: Change the mode
Click Change projection mode to switch between duplicate and extend.
Method 3 Chromecast or Google TV
-
Step 1: Use Chrome
In Chrome, click ⋮ > Cast, save and share > Cast.
-
Step 2: Choose what to cast
Pick your Chromecast, then under Sources choose Cast tab or Cast screen.
Troubleshooting
No signal on the TV
Check the TV input, try another HDMI cable and port, and press Win + P > Duplicate. Restart with the cable connected.
No sound on the TV
Click the speaker icon on the taskbar and select the TV as the output device.
Image is cut off or blurry
Set the TV’s picture size to Just Scan/Screen Fit, and choose the TV’s native resolution in Display settings.
Win + K doesn’t find the TV
Both devices must support Miracast and be nearby. Update Wi-Fi and graphics drivers, and turn on screen mirroring on the TV.
Frequently asked questions
Can I close my laptop lid while connected?
Yes: in Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does, set Do nothing when plugged in.
What’s the difference between Duplicate and Extend?
Duplicate shows the same image on both. Extend gives you two screens, so you can show slides while seeing notes on your laptop.
Summary
Use an HDMI cable and Win + P to choose Duplicate or Extend, or press Win + K to cast wirelessly. If sound stays on the laptop, select the TV in the speaker menu.
