Before you start
- A recent WhatsApp backup, just in case (Settings > Chats > Chat backup)
Cache, data and chats: what’s the difference?
Cache is temporary data WhatsApp stores to load things faster: thumbnails, previews and bits of files. Deleting it is safe; WhatsApp simply rebuilds what it needs.
Data (or “storage”) is different. Clearing data on Android resets WhatsApp like a new install, and anything not in a backup is lost. That’s why you should only ever tap Clear cache, never Clear data or Clear storage.
Method 1 Clear the WhatsApp cache on Android
-
Step 1: Open app settings for WhatsApp
Press and hold the WhatsApp icon and tap App info (ⓘ). Or go to Settings > Apps > WhatsApp.
-
Step 2: Open Storage
Tap Storage or Storage & cache. You’ll see how much space the app, user data and cache each use.
-
Step 3: Tap Clear cache
Tap Clear cache. The cache figure drops to zero or close to it. Do not tap Clear data or Clear storage.
-
Step 4: Open WhatsApp
Open WhatsApp. Your chats, groups and media are all still there. The first load may take a second longer while thumbnails rebuild.
Method 2 Free up space inside WhatsApp (Android and iPhone)
This is the closest thing to “clearing cache” on iPhone, and it’s often where the real space goes: forwarded videos and memes in busy groups.
-
Step 1: Open Manage storage
In WhatsApp, go to Settings (on Android: ⋮ > Settings) > Storage and data > Manage storage.
-
Step 2: Review the biggest files
At the top you’ll see Larger than 5 MB and Forwarded many times. Below that, every chat is listed with how much space its media uses.
-
Step 3: Delete what you don’t need
Open a category or chat, tap Select, choose videos, photos or documents and tap the bin icon. Only the selected media are deleted; the text messages in the chat remain.
Method 3 Offload WhatsApp on iPhone (keeps chats)
Offloading frees the space used by the app and can fix sluggishness. To reclaim space used by media, use Manage storage above.
-
Step 1: Back up first
In WhatsApp, go to Settings > Chats > Chat Backup and tap Back Up Now. Offloading keeps your data, but a fresh backup is good insurance.
-
Step 2: Open iPhone Storage
Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage and tap WhatsApp.
-
Step 3: Tap Offload App
Tap Offload App and confirm. iOS removes the app itself but keeps its Documents & Data, which includes your chats.
-
Step 4: Reinstall
Tap Reinstall App on the same screen, or tap the WhatsApp icon on your Home Screen. Open WhatsApp: your chats are still there.
Troubleshooting
WhatsApp still uses a lot of storage after clearing cache
Cache is usually small. Most space is media, so use Settings > Storage and data > Manage storage to delete large videos and forwarded files.
I don’t see Clear cache on my Android phone
Some phones show Storage first; tap it to reveal Clear cache. On Xiaomi and some other phones, tap Clear data and pick Clear cache from the pop-up, never Clear all data.
After offloading, WhatsApp asks me to verify my number
That can happen after a reinstall. Verify the same number and, if asked, tap Restore Chat History to restore from iCloud.
Frequently asked questions
Will clearing WhatsApp cache delete my messages?
No. Clearing the cache on Android only removes temporary files. Messages, photos, contacts and groups stay. Only Clear data deletes them.
Why is there no Clear cache option for WhatsApp on iPhone?
iOS manages app caches automatically and doesn’t give a button for it. Use WhatsApp’s Manage storage or Offload App instead.
How often should I clear WhatsApp cache?
Only when WhatsApp is slow, glitchy or your phone is short on space. There’s no benefit to doing it routinely.
Does clearing cache log me out of WhatsApp?
No. You stay logged in, and linked devices such as WhatsApp Web stay connected.
Summary
On Android, Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Storage > Clear cache is safe and keeps your chats. On any phone, WhatsApp’s Manage storage frees the most space, and on iPhone, Offload App is a safe reset. Just stay away from Clear data.
