How to Hide Your Phone Number When Making a Call

You can hide your number for a single call by dialling a short code before the number, such as *67 in the US and Canada or 141 in the UK. To hide it on every call, turn off caller ID in your phone settings, if your carrier allows it.

Before you start

  • A carrier that allows caller ID blocking (most do)

Method 1 Hide your number for one call (codes)

The code only applies to that one call, and nothing changes in your settings. You can’t save it with a contact on all phones, so you may need to dial it each time.

  1. Step 1: Open the keypad

Open the Phone app and go to the keypad.

  2. Step 2: Type the code, then the number

Type your country’s code with no spaces, followed directly by the full number. For example, in the US: *67 555 123 4567.

  3. Step 3: Make the call

Press call. The other person sees No Caller ID, Private, Restricted or Unknown.

Number-hiding codes by country
Country or network Code to dial before the number
USA and Canada *67
UK and Ireland 141
Australia 1831
New Zealand 0197
Most of Europe, Africa, Asia, Latin America (GSM) #31#
India Varies; ask your carrier (many use #31#)

Method 2 Hide your number on every call (Android)

  1. Step 1: Open Phone settings

Open the Phone app, tap ⋮ and choose Settings.

  2. Step 2: Find Caller ID

On Google Pixel and many phones: Calls > Additional settings > Caller ID. On Samsung: Supplementary services > Show my caller ID.

  3. Step 3: Choose Hide number

Select Hide number (or Never). If the option is greyed out or shows an error, your carrier controls it.

Method 3 Hide your number on every call (iPhone)

Some carriers, including several in the US, don’t show this switch. In that case, use *67 for single calls or ask your carrier to add permanent caller ID blocking (often free).

  1. Step 1: Open Phone settings

Go to Settings > Apps > Phone (or Settings > Phone on older iOS).

  2. Step 2: Turn off Show My Caller ID

Tap Show My Caller ID and turn it off.

Troubleshooting

My number still shows when I use the code

Check you dialled the code with no spaces and that you’re using the right code for your country. Some prepaid or business plans don’t support it; ask your carrier.

The call fails or says “invalid number”

Make sure there is no extra 0 or + in the wrong place. With #31#, type the number in full international or national format right after the code.

The Show My Caller ID option is missing on iPhone

Your carrier doesn’t let you change it on the phone. Use the one-call code instead or contact customer care.

Frequently asked questions

Is it legal to hide my phone number?

Yes, hiding your caller ID is legal in most countries. Using it to harass people is not, and police can trace hidden calls through the carrier.

Does *67 work for text messages?

No. Codes only hide your number on voice calls. Texts always show your number.

Can I hide my number on WhatsApp calls?

No. WhatsApp always shows your number or profile to the person you call.

Does hiding my number cost money?

Usually not. The one-call codes are free on most networks.

Summary

For a single private call, dial *67, 141 or #31# (depending on your country) before the number. To hide it on all calls, turn off caller ID in your phone settings. Remember that emergency services can always see your number.
