Before you start

  • The router’s admin login (usually on its label)
  • A device connected to the router

Method 1 Find and open your router’s settings

  1. Step 1: Use the app if there is one

Many routers are managed with an app: TP-Link Tether/Deco, Google Home, eero, Netgear Nighthawk/Orbi, ASUS Router, Huawei AI Life, or your provider’s app.

  2. Step 2: Or find the address

The address is on the router label. On Windows, run ipconfig and look for Default Gateway. On iPhone: Settings > Wi-Fi > (i) > Router. On Android: tap the Wi-Fi network for details.

  3. Step 3: Log in

Type the address into a browser and log in with the admin password from the label (not the Wi-Fi password, unless they’re the same).

Find your router’s address on Windows
ipconfig | findstr /i "Gateway"

Method 2 Change the name and password

Dual-band routers may have separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz settings; change both, or turn on Smart Connect to use one name.

  1. Step 1: Open wireless settings

Look for Wireless, Wi-Fi, WLAN or Wireless Security.

  2. Step 2: Change the name (SSID)

Pick a name that doesn’t reveal your identity, address or router model.

  3. Step 3: Set a strong password

Use at least 12 characters; a few random words with numbers is strong and easy to type. Choose WPA3-Personal or WPA2/WPA3 security.

  4. Step 4: Save

Click Save/Apply. Your connection drops; reconnect with the new details.

Troubleshooting

I can’t log in to the router

Check the address and admin password on the label. If someone changed it and you don’t know it, a factory reset is the only option.

A device won’t connect with the new password

Forget the network on that device and join again. Older devices may not support WPA3; use WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I change my Wi-Fi password?

When someone shouldn’t have access any more, or if it was weak. A strong password doesn’t need regular changes.

Can I change the password from my phone?

Yes, using the router’s app or its admin page in your phone’s browser.

Summary

Open your router’s app or admin page (find the address with ipconfig), go to Wireless settings, change the SSID and password with WPA3/WPA2, and reconnect your devices.
