Hooks come in all shapes and sizes, and the larger the number size the smaller the hook. Common hook sizes usually start at No1 and go up to size 24.

When choosing a hook take into consideration the species of fish you intend to catch, and what size bait your going to use. Its no good putting a massive hook on your line and then use a single maggot for your bait, this presentation will look and feel unnatural to a fish.

Try to match your hook to your bait size. You can buy hooks ready tied to a length of line, or loose so you can attach them your self. I recommend you buy barbless hooks these are much kinder to the fish and as long as you keep a tight line between your rod and the fish when playing it you should not have a problem. Many commercial fisheries do not allow barbed hooks. One piece of advise I must stress if you decide to buy loose hooks is to learn how to tie several knots, remember a badly tied hook is a lost fish.
