How to Make Navajo Fry Bread
Ingredients
- 1 cup white flour
- 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1/2 baking soda
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
Steps
- Mix dry ingredients.
- Add water to dry ingredients and mix well.
- Knead dough on a floured board until it becomes elastic.
- Let dough rest 10 minutes, covered.
- Roll out dough until it is 1/2 an inch (1.5 cm) thick.
- Cut into squares or circles.
- Deep fry at 370ºF (190ºC / moderately hot) until golden brown.
- Drain on paper towels. Enjoy!
Tips
- For extra flavor, drizzle with honey.
- For the special occasions, such as a holiday or festive season, instead of making the dough into ordinary squares or circles, make other shapes that relate to the occasion. Don't try to add too much detail though as you won't be able to see your work when it is baked!
Warnings
- Be careful of the hot vegetable oil. Take precautions to prevent being splattered by hot oil during the cooking process.
