How to Make Hardtack

Hardtack is basically bread that is hard because is doesn't have yeast. Back in the day, it was a popular meal for soldiers and sailors because it didn't grow mold and was easy to prepare.


Ingredients

  • 5 cups flour
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tbs salt

Steps

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
  2. Mix all ingredients together in a bowl.
  3. Knead dough and roll out till its 1/2 inch thick.
  4. Cut dough into 3x3 squares. Poke a 3x3 series of holes in the center, evenly spaced.
  5. Bake in preheated oven
  6. Take out when its a light golden brown.


Tips

  • You can make it sweeter by adding sugar and cinamon.


Warnings

  • If you expect this to taste as good as cake, you're in for a surprise.
  • Don't break your teeth on it!
